On Social Media and Its Power; Excerpts From A Lecture

Good morning everyone. I would like to share with you all some video from a lecture I did earlier this year on Social Media. The title of it is called “Finding Your Voice in the Blogosphere” Thank you to Prof. Brandon Melendez of Metropolitan College of New York for granting time for me to speak to his class. They really asked a lot of great questions.

If there is a wider demand, I may continue this effort to spread knowledge of social media in  the form of a workshop. That remains to be seen if it will come to that. For now, enjoy the vid.

Huffington Post Links to Polite On Society

Good morning folks! 2012 is off to an interesting start in politics, and for this site as well. I have discovered that a post on the environmental issue of hydraulic fracturing has been linked to by major political news site Huffington Post. In an article titled ““An Open Letter to Gov. Cuomo and DEC Commissioner Martens”  contributor Dave Colavito calls on both officials to state why they do not call for protections for the people who may be negatively impacted by hydrofracking.

It is good to see this issue get the attention it merits. Exposing our water supply to chemicals is nothing to take lightly. To read my original post, see this story Tell Governor Cuomo Not to Frack Around With our Water Supply!

Black Press All Star Winners Tour White House

Image via Black Press Radio

November 16th, 2011, Washington,D.C.- On  Tuesday November 15th, 2011, the Winners of the Black Press All-Star Awards gathered in the nations capital. After winning the award almost exactly two months ago, many of the winners surmised that the mid-September ceremony would be the only mention of this noteworthy achievement. However, there was yet more to come.  In further recognition of their collective accomplishments as Black media professionals, the group was invited to the White House for a tour.

This is a first for the Black Press All Star Awards. No other set of winners before had been invited to the White House. The day started off with a meet up at the National Press Club, the major point of contact for many journalists in the city. The group was even congratulated by the VP of the club, who noticed us when we took our photo. Soon afterwards, we would all have to head over to the check point for the visit to the most famous address in the world.

No photos were allowed, but its sure that everyone took in with their eyes and other senses the moment. The day would wrap with the group having a network lunch at the famous restaurant B. Smiths, and the owner came out to greet our table. All in all, a great day of reconnecting and recognition.

MSNBC’s Tamron Hall Mentions Polite On Society As A Blog She Reads

In an article titled “What I Read” on yesterdays Atlantic Wire, Tamron Hall of MSNBC mentions Polite On Society as a blog that she regularly reads. The NewsNation host gets her news from the internet exclusively. This blog was mentioned between the iconic Chicago Tribune and The Grio, two major sources of news. Not even a  full month after winning the Best Black Blogger Award, and things like this occur. Awesome.

I want to take the time to thank Tamron Hall for linking to this site, and appreciate the recognition. I am truly humbled. You never know who is reading your material on the internet. Talk about motivation!

Polite On Society Wins Best Black Blog of 2011

Marc W. Polite wins best Black Blogger of 2011

Good evening my readers! Tonight I come to you from Washington, DC, the locale of the 2011  Black Press All Star Awards. Held at Washington Post headquarters, the annual event is a recognition of African-Americans working in media, be it print, radio, television or online. In attendance as a nominee, I made my way to the event, accompanied by my supportive family. Having them there made the surprising news all that more exhilarating. I am the winner of the award for Best Black Blog of 2011! It still is sort of surreal.

I did not expect to win. So of course when I was asked to address the crowd, I had NOTHING prepared, and pretty much had to go off the top of my head. I spoke briefly the continued necessity for Black media to tell the truth whether or not it is popular. I think I did aight, considering that I did not prepare a statement beforehand. I did not want to jinx myself and act like I just “had it” Overall, this has been a thrilling day, and it is great to be recognized by Black media professionals. The African-American community needs its own media outlets, and I am committed to fulfilling that need with this blog along with other upcoming ventures.

One things I neglected to do in my remarks was to do my thanks. Of course, I have to thank God for blessing me with the presence of mind to address many of the weighty issues that I deal with on here. I would like to thank my wife for being supportive and dealing with the time away from home networking and learning things about tech that at times keep me out late. I want to thank my daughter for making me get up early in the morning, as that is often when many of these posts are written. LOL. I would like to thank my readers for inspiring me and interacting with me. For suggesting I delve into topics, and pick up on things in new angles. And last but not least, I would like to thank everyone who voted for me in the category of Best Black Blog- Digital Arts. I faced some really stiff competition, but y’all really came through for a brotha.

Congratulations to The Philadelphia Tribune  for winning Black Newspaper of the Year, and to the Howard Hilltop for winning Best Black College Newspaper. Maya Rhodan, who writes for the Hilltop, came away with the College Journalist to Watch Award. Tomorrow is the second day of the ceremony, and there are more events to attend. So I will turn in and save my energy for that. Good night all!

Polite On Society Nominated for Best Black Blog of 2011

Greetings everyone! I just wanted to take the time to share some great news with my readers. I know I don’t post here often, even though this is my official site, but you should know that my blog Polite On Society was nominated for Best Black Blog of 2011 by The Historical Black Press Foundation  Based in Washington DC, HBPF is an organization that focuses on Black media, print and online. With media diversity being one of their core concerns, their coverage ranges from political figures to sports and entertainment as well. They publish Black Press Magazine, a major source of online coverage of the latest happenings in Black America. I am truly honored to be recognized by this news organization.
In addition to being in the category of Best Black Blog- Digital Media, those of you reading can vote for my blog. To Vote for Polite On Society  in the Digital Arts-Best Black Blog Category, send an e-mail to blackpressradio@yahoo.com with the subject line “VOTE: 2011 BP All Stars” You have until August 15th. Only once per day.

To be in the same category as Jasmyne Cannick and Urban Informer is heartening. After two years of grinding, its good to know that folks are paying attention to what I put out on this medium. I want to thank my readers for being apart of this journey, because it is you all that keep me posting regularly. It ain’t easy being a one man show, but I put my heart into this, and the rewards are coming forth. The awards ceremony is in DC in September. Looks like my Harlem born and bred self will just have to make that journey to see what’s good.  This should be cool. I haven’t been to DC since President Obama’s inauguration. I wonder if I will have a chance to hit up Bus Boys and Poets while I’m down there. Ha. #CantHurt

From here, its onward and upward. I am grateful for my journey, and hope you all continue to read, comment, and engage with the matters I raise on here. Peace!
